Production Pilot Plant Info

About the Pilot Plant

A model for campus sustainability.

A group of students that are part of the UT chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers team on campus started producing biodiesel in 2005 from used cooking oil from campus dining services. The pilot plant is a model for recycling campus waste to help supplement campus energy use.

Sustainability in Action.

Waste vegetable oil is collected on campus and turned into biodiesel fuel by students for use in UT diesel vehicles.

The recycled biodiesel  saves the university money and reduces harmful emissions.

Using biodiesel reduces the use of foreign oil and the waste of cooking oil

Student run project:

The pilot plant is run by students and is supervised by Dr. David Irick from the department of Mechanical Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering.

Student responsibilities include:

  • Collecting waste oil from campus food services

  • Filter and test the oil for quality

  • Run the reaction processor

  • Test the biodiesel for quality

  • Deliver the fuel to Facility services for use

  • Use the biodiesel in the Challenge X Vehicle

  • Take care of byproduct disposal and recycling
